When you say "add a password" do you mean "protocols bgp group  neighbor 
authentication-key "?

If so, the fact that the BGP session flaps is expected: the BGP session
password must be the same on both sides and the fact that the session was up
without the password implies that the Cisco on the other side doesn't have a
password configured.
