My $0.02

Of the CCNP's I have met I am very impressed. The CCNP tests are hard and
the tests encompass lots of networking information.

As far as the CCNA. I have provided phone support to a couple of CCNA's who
couldn't figure out why when at a router> prompt config t doesn't work. A
lot of the CCNA's I see are CNEs and/or MCSEs who want a better
understanding of networking, and of course more $$.

I have recommended to my employer that they require all network consultants
obtain the become CCNA. Not that I expect them to build a complex Cisco
network, but it gives a basic understanding of networking that is missed
with the MCSE and CNE. This is a more well-rounded approach. Their concern
is an MCSE making $60,000 a year wants a raise because he is a CCNA.

I guess I am one of the lucky CCIE's who get about 70% "hands on" and 30%
SE/Design/Presentations. I talked to a major phone company about a position
and was told "We don't pay field engineers that much. You need to be a
Design Engineer." I said no thanks.

Subject: Cisco certifications [3:3519]

After a few months of lurking on this list, I get the distint impression
that the only certification that gets any respect out there is the vaunted
CCIE.

I can understand why the CCNA doesn't get much respect. There's only so
much substance there.

Why is it that so many snub Cisco's mid-level certification - the CCNP? It
seems that those with the magic 4 digits are particularly vociferous in this
arena. I suppose that there are a handful of folks out there that can get
the CCNP without touching a router, but those can generally be filtered out
simply by glancing at experience.

I get the impression that most CCIEs are in sales engineering and design
positions anyway, which would seem to position CCNPs as ideal "hands-on"
folks to administer networks.

Also, I wonder what the general impression is for the design certifications.

I appreciate any and all feedback.
