Sorry to hear you didn't get the job.
But here's where you can shine. Hope you kept the names and phone numbers of
the interviewers.
Call each of them. Tell them you appreciated the opportunity to speak with
them. Ask them politely, in a friendly manner, if they were to give you
advice as to how you might fill the next opening that comes up, what would
it be.
I have to be honest here. When I was a hiring manager, I hated getting calls
like that. Mostly because I felt badly that I didn't have jobs for everyone
who walked through the door. Liberal guilt or something. But here is where
you can shine. Mr. Manager, I appreciate that you chose the person who you
thought would best fill the opening. I hope that you have a moment or two to
offer me a bit of advice. Where do you think my skills would fit? Do you
know any other shops where I might have a better chance at getting hired?
For this particular job, what kinds of skills would I need to acquire or
improve upon to make you consider me as a good candidate?
That kind of stuff, if handled correctly, can get you a lot of points. Who
knows? Maybe you might impress the interviewers enough that they might hire
you anyway. Or maybe when another opening comes up, they will call you in
before placing the ad or calling a headhunter.

that attitude makes a big difference. When you go into an interview
situation and ask to prove you can do the job, or suggest that in addition
to the beauty contest that some kind of practical be given, whether the
employer takes you up on the offer or not, you have made a positive
impression.
