What about New Jersey? One favorite line from my favorite movie:

Cop: Ever get over to New Jersey, Nash?
Nash: Not if I can help it.

Bach to the topic at hand.

Companies in general have no clue. That's why you see these ads for CCIE's
with ten years experience installing products that have only been out two
years.

Companies want bright 30 year olds with 20 years networking experience.

Companies want someone with a PhD in astrophysics and a Masters Degree in
economics, plus 15 years as a call center manager and ten years managing
large data centers.

I exaggerate only slightly. Check out the Schwab jobs site for some rather
interesting combinations of qualifications

Some companies discriminate against young folks. Some against older folks.
Some require a college degree ( plus the ability to lift 50 pounds ) some
don't like college degrees.

Take everything with a grain of salt. Work your way into the interview, and
use the interview to practice your interview skills, and to discover things
about companies and jobs.

Humorous aside: I once interviewed in a shop where the manager was 6-4 280
and all the network engineers were shorter than 5-7. As a six footer and a
pound or two heavy myself, do you suppose I got the job? I could tell by the
look in the eyes that this particular manager was in to towering over his
subordinates!

There should be nothing on your resume to indicate age. Don't put the year
you graduated from high school. If you have more than ten years experience,
don't list more than ten years worth of dates. Concentrate on the skills
portions.

The jobs are there. Just keep the eyes and mind open.

Best wishes to you.

Chuck

Ive been looking for work for roughly two months now and have started
noticing a trend, at least with jobs. Originall I wrote a nice blurb asking
if anyone else has noticed alot of companies asking for way to much out of a
person, and paying way to little, who were also discriminatory towards young
people without degrees, but decided to just ask if anyone knows of any
companies which have an Entry Level to Mid Level job for somone who is young
<20>, motivated to learn, a college dropout <not grades>, and has probably 6
years worth of full time experience on computers <I cut my teeth in
netwrorking on arcnet and Noevell 2.2> It seems the only jobs i have found
online are wanting superhuman CCIEs who know unix, nt, and novell with 12
years of experience and will accept working for 60K. PS, I have my CCNA,
and DA <no classes, no studying> and have been doing LAN.WAN design and
support for a small company <maybe big firms dont like mom and pop stores?>
I expect to have my CCNP and DP within 6 weeks, I know most of it except
ISDN, Dialup, and High level routing like BGP. Id even accept entry level
with bad pay as long as it has lots of growth opertunity and i dont have to
help end users fix their outlook. Im looking for anything within an hour
of Philadelphia thats not Delaware <insert Delaware joke here>.
