Hey Kevin,

You are not switching from MCSE or CNE to Cisco. You are adding to what you
already have!

>From a network troubleshooting standpoint, won't knowing what you need to
know to get an MCSE help troubleshoot a network connectivity problem?

I recently installed a Cisco 805 router at a customer site replacing dial up
modems as thier internet connection. The customer's administrator could
only be characterized as an experienced Windows 98 user. He had to add
TCP/IP to all the desktops since they only had IPX configured. I showed him
how to add TCP/IP his system and then he did the rest of them. Two days
later, he called me and told me that 10.10.1.1 through 10.10.1.10 could
access the internet but 10.10.1.11 through 10.10.1.18 could not. I telneted
in and checked the NAT access list thoroughly and then called him back and
asked him to change his IP address from 10.10.1.1 to 10.10.1.20. He still
had connectivity to the internet. I asked him to go to a no-working system
and ping the IP address of S0 on the router and a local system. He could
ping the local system but not the S0 IP. Answer: The default gateway was
not set on 10.10.1.11 through 10.10.1.18. The customer did 10 systems right
after I showed him how and the other systems the next day.

How did I know this? It was a standard Microsoft test question from more
than one test I had to take to be an MCSE.

I did the cisco stuff great but the customer screwed up the desktop IPs. I
fixed it in 3 minutes over the phone and now the customer thinks I walk on
water.

On the other hand, I know that I'm a Cisco beginner. I actually stumbled
through the router installation but got it right. I brought the router home
with me the night before the installation and read all the manuals that came
with it. But my knowledge of other things saved the day.

A couple of weeks later, I got my CCNA but already had MCSE, Compaq ASE
(AlphaServer/NT, AlphaServer/VMS and StorageWorks Specialist), MCP and
Associate in Engineering - Electronic Design.

These are just the things that I currently admit to.

I also have tucked away, somewhere in my basement, a folder full of course
certificates for some old DEC equipment which probably have all been retired
long ago.

All of this information that I have learned builds on itself. If you have
already learned many types of equipment, a new one is just an improved
version of something you already know.

We all have different backgrounds when we decide to study for CCNA. Even
teenagers have at least Windows user experience. Some of them have been
working with home networks they or thier dad setup 5 years ago or more. My
daughter is 10 years old and has been using a PC for 6 years. We've had a
network in the house for over 3 years. By the time she (hopefully) gets out
of college, she'll have 18 years of computer experience and 15 years of
exposure to networks. Won't any of that experience help her then?

So, don't throw away that MCSE or other knowledge when you interview for
networking jobs. Those skills are used to troubleshoot higher layers of the
ISO model.

Good Luck in Your Job Search,

Vern Stitt, AE, ASE , CCNA, MCP, MCSE and a few other things
