As someone that (excuse me while I cry) actually works on a help desk, let me give my to cents. I work for a small ISP in London and the way things generally seem to work is this:
Most technical employees start out as first/second line technical support. Assuming you are not inept, you make third line technical support after about eight months. Four to five months later you generally get promoted to business support (in which case
you get to go configure routers on customer sites) or junior systems admin (in which case you get to configure routers at work).
Unfortunately, I am part time during term time and they won't consider me for anything besides first/sercond line support. Doing the occasional NS lookup is about as technical as this job gets. An artichoke with legs could do this job. Needless to say,
I will be leaving soon.
While we're on the subject of me, let me ask for some advice. I am an American studying in London. I'm in year 2 of a three year Computing and Information Systems degree (they do three year degrees over here with 5 mo off for summer. How cool is
that?). Anyway, I've been working on a helpdesk for about 9 months now. I plan to get my CCNA this summer. By the time I graduate I will hopefully have: A 2:1 degree (probably the equivalent of a 3.5 GPA in the states), a CCNA, and two years work
experience. Will my prospects be good? Will I be able to get $40,000 - $50,000 a year?
Thanks in advance to anyone that replies!
Scott
