Howard is correct any setting that is default will not show in the IOS.
Release notes or research show tell you what he defaults for a given IOS
are.
I had a problem with echo on an IP Telephony and I had IOS 12.3 At 12.3 the
default echo cancellor coverage is 64ms which also happens to be the maximum
value.
Also Howard mentiona 3550 which is a switch. I found out that the vlan
configuration for a switch is kept in a separate file on a switch. Do show
flash and notice the extra files that you do not see on a router.
