It almost sounds like you are against people using books at all, and taking
the test only on experience. That to me sounds like reinventing the deep
dish over and over. Why not combine the experience with a book and learn new
stuff about it, that you might not ever know was possible.
A good example is that I have been using Microsoft Word for years now, but
then one day I was walking around in a book store, I grapped a Word book and
looked in it for 2 minutes, and then I found out that I could click to the
left of a line and mark the entire line. I had always used the cursor over
the entire line to mark it, and if I hadn't read it there, I would probably
still do it that way.
The thing that I'm trying to prove here, is that many years of experience
with anything, will not guarentee that you know everything about it. That
attitude will be very dangerous for your self, because one day you will find
everyone else around you knowing much more about the different devices than
you, because they used study guides.
In the ICND book, I have found some things that they just mention, but never
really explain in dept, while Todd's book(s) do a better job to make you
understand why and what it is.
My last comment in this Wednesday morning e-mail would be: I would be more
comfortable around Cisco Routers/Switches if I had only read Todd's book
compared to if I had only read the ICND book from Cisco Press.
Another two cents.
