Cable Modems posted 05/01/2000

Hi,

I have been trying for several days to hook my 2501 to the internet
via my cable modem.

Bit of history first. I get two IP's from my ISP's dhcp server. I want
to be able to use one of the IP's so that a buddy of mine can telnet
into my router.

I received some advice from a user on here to try to the following:

"So to configure my router for internet access (I use it to reverse
telnet into my other equipment) I assigned my IP address to E0. I
then changed my hostname to the name assigned to me by the
cable company and I set the IP domain-name variable to the
domain assigned by the cable company.
Once this is done reset the cable modem (to clear it's cache of
MAC addresses. Once it's up and running you should connect just
fine."

I tried this and did not get any farther than what I was. I did not get
a host name from my cable company. I received on NIC card for
one machine and I have to provide the second NIC. The MAC
address for the second NIC was not given to them so I must be
getting both IP's from the MAC address in the cable modem. I did
not receive a host name from my cable company. Whatever I have
in the identification tab of my network setup is accepted. However
the domain is accesscable.net

I have been successful in manually enter the info in my WIN98 box
by putting in the IP that was assigned when requesting from dhcp,
the gateway, dns, hostname and domain.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Bill
