I can't speak to how much IS-IS will be on exams, but it is definitely not a dead protocol for ISPs. Cisco may be fielding its traffic engineering extensions first on IS-IS, then on OSPF.

In my carrier router organization at Nortel, we see both IS-IS and OSPF as very real requirements.

If Cisco ever develops a serious ISP routing certification, it might make sense to move IS-IS to that. Essentially, it's a niche protocol today.

I expect to be doing an IS-IS tutorial at NANOG in June, coauthored with Shantam Biswas. It will be available on the net when finished.

I dont recall IS-IS being on the published exam objectives, however, routing
protocols in general is.

I believe IS-IS was replaced pretty much by OSPF... or at least it has the
same "feel" of areas. IS-IS does support multiple protocols and still can be
used heavily in a DECnet environment.

I think you will be safe by briefly reviewing IS-IS.
