Thanks everybody,
I've been playing with this, obviously PPP is needed for multilink but I found
that CHAP isn't. In fact I got multilink to work without PPP multilink, it
works just with dialer load threshold configured - but the cct bounces every
time the idle timeout is reached (before anybody says you must configure ppp
multilink - I was just playing ;-).

For callback CHAP is required, without it the call is made normally and no
request for callback is made.

I would be interested in any other occasions when CHAP is a must.

Thanks again everybody who took time to reply.

Mat.

You also need PPP if you want to bring up the second B channel.

There are some situations that require PPP and CHAP to be enabled
without the specific instructions to do so. For example, to configure
one way dialup without a dial string on one side, PPP and CHAP are
required. I am sure there are other situations, but that is the first
    one I thought of.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,
I'm doing an ISDN lab and in the solution they have enabled PPP and
    CHAP -
although there wasn't any instructions to do so.

Should I assume that this should always be done unless instructed
    otherwise?

    Thanks,

    Mat.
