Xmodem: the destroyer of switches.. [1:1374]

here is the situation:

cat 1900 sw w/ invalid firmware (boot ver 1.04 (yes its old))
xmodem upgrade only way to fix non-existant firmware (so it says)
minicom (linux 2.2.13) error when initial sync of systems
hyperterm (win 2k pro) checksum error

so far my wanderings w/ xmodem have led nowhere.

the sw boots up to the diag menu which has two options:
1) xmodem upgrade
2) reset system functions

(or something to that effect)

this is my boggle, are there any suggestions??
(functional preferably)
